The first song sung by Yesudas is Jaathi Bhedam Matha Dwesham (music: M B Sreenivasan) on 14 November 1961, which he usually sings on all the special occasions in front of the audience. But the first film song was 'Attention Penne Attention', which he sang with Santha P. Nair, a veteran singer of that time. Yesudas began his career in playback singing in the Malayalam movie Kaalpadukal (1962) and Tamil, Telugu and Kannada movies in the early 1960s.

Balachander), but the first released movie was Konjum Kumari (music: Veda).

The trio of Salil, Yesudas and Prem Nazir (the evergreen hero of Malayalam Cinema) took the Malayalam Cinema Industry of the 1970s by storm. It was generally agreed that Yesudas's voice was the most suited one for Prem Nazir.

In 1970 he was nominated to head the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy and was the youngest person ever to occupy the post.

By the 1970s Yesudas entered Bollywood. The first Hindi song he sang was for the movie Jai Jawan Jai Kissan (1971), but the first released movie was Chhoti Si Baat. He has sung Hindi songs for many leading actors in Hindi cinema including Amitabh Bachchan, Amol Palekar and Jeetendra. He has sung many evergreen Hindi film songs for music directors including Ravindra Jain, Bappi Lahiri, Khayyam, Rajkamal and Salil Chowdhury.

Yesudas's most popular Hindi songs are in the 1976 movie Chitchor, with music given by Ravindra Jain. The greatest tribute to Yesudas was paid by Ravindra Jain, in an interview wherein the blind music director confessed that if ever he happened to regain vision, the first person he would like to see would be Yesudas.

In 1965, he was invited by the Soviet Union government to perform at music concerts in various cities in the USSR and also sang a Russian song over Radio Kazakhstan. Role models

Sree Narayana Guru’s great message, One religion and One God for all humanity", influenced young Yesudas in his dealings with his fellow men. He had his own heroes among the musicians too. Mohammed Rafi, Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar and Balamurali Krishna are the ones he admires the most.

Spiritualism

Yesudas has been visiting Kollur Mookambika temple, Kollur, Karnataka on his birthday to sing keerthans of Saraswati devi, the Goddess of knowledge, music and the arts. The music festival started on his 60th birthday. The nine-day music festival begins every January at Kollur Mookambika Temple. On Sunday, 10 January 2010, he celebrated his 70th birthday (Sapthathi) at Kollur Sri Mookambika Temple with 'Sangeetharchana' (classical devotional songs), along with 70 singers before goddess Mookambika. The Sangeetharchana included "Pancharatna Gayana" of Thyagaraja's poems. He also took part in the Vidyarambha function. All India Radio broadcast the special Sangeetharchana all over Kerala. Yesudas also has many songs devoted to Lord Ayyappa including the hit song "Harivarasanam".

Yesudas believes that all religions teach the same lesson - the lesson of love. He actively participates in programmes against religious violence. He once said that he was fortunate to start his singing career singing a sloka which denotes communal harmony and unity. In 2002, during Marad massacare, he visited the place along with the veteran poetess Sugathakumari, and conducted classes against violence. He even practiced that in his own life by fixing marriages of his sons with Hindu women.

Music company

In 1980 Yesudas established the Tharangani Studio at Trivandrum. In 1992 the office and studio were moved to Chennai, Tamil Nadu and the company was incorporated in the US in 1998. Tharangni Studio and Tharangni Records became a recording center in Kerala which, for the first time, brought out audio cassettes of Malayalam film songs in stereo. The record company also had a voice mixing studio in Studio27, Chennai. The studio continues to produce and present events of Yesudas both for film and Indian classical music concerts throughout the world.

Notable facts

Yesudas has the rare feat of performing the classical concert for 36 times in the 36-year-old Soorya Music festival organised by Soorya Krishnamoorthy. This is one among his concerts which is highly followed by serious musical lovers and often rated as the most popular among his concerts in India.

After winning the Kerala State Award for Best Playback singer on numerous occasions, he asked that he be ruled out of contention so as to give his peers and newcomers a chance of winning the award. Despite his request, he was still given this award several times in the following years.

Harivarasanam, a devotional song musical version composed by G. Devarajan, recited before closing the temple at Sabarimala was sung by Yesudas. Though there have been many different renditions of this song by many different renowned singers, Sabarimala officially uses Yesudas' voice for Harivarasanam every day.

Swaralaya Yesudas award is a prestigious award for music artists in recognition of their outstanding performance. The award is instituted jointly by Swaralaya, an organisation that promotes music and Kairali Channel, based in Trivandrum, Kerala. Awards have been given annually since 2000. Controversies

Controversial remarks on women and jeans

On 2 October 2014, Yesudas sparked a row while speaking at a public function on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanthi. His statement, "Women shouldn't wear jeans and display themselves before people. What is meant to be covered should be covered. Wearing jeans and roaming around attracts unnecessary attention. We must respect cultural doctrines. Women's beauty is in their soberness, they should not become like men," evoked protests from Women's Rights and Political organizations, for being sexist and derogatory to women. There has been an increasing pressure on him to withdraw the statement and apologize, which was marked by #yesudas trending on Twitter in India for infamous reasons.

advent of the monsoon after a scorching summer. Each song is preceded by Soumitra's poetry, narratedby the poet himself.

The market success of Gaarva prompted the music director/singer/lyricist team to create a second one soon after, titled Saanj  Gaarva (सांज गारवा), or "the evening breeze". The second album flopped as it followed a similar format, the poetry reading preceding each song, this time by noted Marathi actor, Sachin Khedekar. He has already been in Mumbai for three years, struggling to make a living. "When I went for the Indian Idol audition, I had only seven rupees in my pocket," he says. But now he refuses to leave Mumbai, "I will only go Home after I have become something," he says. He remembers previous visits home only too well.  Indian Idol has given him oppourtunity. "There are some tentative offers," he says "I hope something will come of them, Upaarwala kuch na kuch zaroor karega, "

Rahul Suxena

Rahul Saxena is an Indian singer. He was the 11th contestant in the first Indian Idol (Season 1), a singing competition held in India.

Rahul Saxena may have been voted out of the top 11 Indian Idol contestants, but the 22 year old is still very busy!

He started singing in school. His father, he is a government employee works in the telephone exchange and sings very well, and Rahul inherited the talent from him.

He sang for Star's SA Re Ga Ma Pa earlier. Have done the Sangeet Prabhakar course, which is a six-year course and is equivalent to a BA in music. He completed his graduation from Delhi's Shyamlal College of Arts and Commerce. He shifted to Mumbai in June 2004.

Rahul came into the competition with a great singing talent but had no clue that he could also become an Indian Idol. He didn’t have a great personality of a Pop star. He was just the average joe from the Indian middle class. Obviously because of his singing gift and quaint charm, he rose up to the top 10 singers category in the competition. He was among the top 11 contestants. He was eliminated on January 7. It was a shock. The short-listed singers were made to stay in a star hotel. Rahul became a friend of all. He had an attitude that made everyone love him and his voice that was as nice as him.

Farah recognised his talent and she asked him to sing in her film, Happy New Year. She announced it on stage.

He wouldn’t even be known to a 1000 people throughout his life if only he didn’t participate in Sony’s Indian Idol competition. Today Rahul Saxena is a hero. A true spirited gentleman.

Many viewers believed Rahul was one of the more talented singers on the show, and unfairly voted out by the millions who vote for the ones who stay on the programme.

A Band Of Boys

ABOB comprising of four extremely talented boys, Karan Oberoi, Sherrin Varghese, Chin2 Bhosle and Siddhaarth Haldipur are India 's First and only Boy Band!
The music for their 1 st album ‘Yeh Bhi Woh Bhi' has been released in August 2002 and obtained a phenomenal response (with the song ‘Meri Neend' spearheading the sales!) subsequently leading to sales crossing 1,00,000 units in less then a fortnight of its launch! The album sales did so well that two more videos were shot and the album re-released as ‘Gori' with the song Gori spearheading the sales this time!
ABOB's debut film, Kiss Kis Ko' , was released in October 2004 with the boys not just having starred in it but having composed the music themselves!

And more recently, in January 2006, ABOB released their 3 rd Album ‘Gaane Bhi Do Yaaron' with the video of the song ‘Nain katari' successfully driving the album sales followed by ‘Aa bhi ja' and ‘Sunn lo zara' . Not surprisingly the response has been phenomenal and the second run of production of tapes and CD's put in the market are fast depleting!

While ABOB are essentially singers, they have been trained in all aspects of stagecraft culminating in their stage shows being something to watch out for – the boys sing, dance & act, and their shows are modeled on Broadway performances abroad. While Hindi music (Indipop and film music) is their forte, they also sing English numbers.

Milestones

March 2001

Over 1,000 aspiring artists from all over India were interviewed and a shortlist of 250 candidates were auditioned in Mumbai. By the end of March, four boys were selected and A BAND OF BOYS' was born who were put through 16 hours of training every day in

  • Physical training and body toning.
  • Dance and aerobic rehearsals
On the basis of their selection and the training process, ABOB were nominated as MTV's ‘ Ubharta Sitara '. An honour never before given to any artiste without an album or music video to their credit!

September 2002

‘Yeh bhi woh bhi ', the debut album of ABOB is released by Asha Bhosle. The chartbuster ‘ Meri Neend ' makes it to the top 5 of all the Countdown Shows on radio and on the music channels within a week of it having been launched! Based on the overwhelming response, 3 more videos were shot – ‘Ishq' , ‘She drives me crazy' and ‘Gori' with 2 of these songs making it to the charts!

February – July 2003

Composed and recorded for ABOB's 2 nd music album (and Original Sound Track!) for their debut film ‘ Kiss Kis Ko '. The film was shot for 2 months in Bali and Jakarta , Indonesia starring ABOB

October 2004

ABOB's debut film ‘ Kiss Kis Ko ' was released and within 2 weeks the music album (composed by the Boys themselves) was sold out! Post which, ABOB has been performing live all over the world and India promoting their album and movie.

January 2006 - March 2007

ABOB released their 3 rd Album – ‘ Gaane Bhi Do Yaaron', the video release for which was the song ‘Nain Katari' which climbed to the top of the charts within a week! It became a huge radio hit and the video was widely acclaimed for its ‘kitsch' look and extreme fun approach! Based on the resounding success of which, 2 more videos have been canned – ‘Áa bhi ja' and ‘Sunn lo zara' and are on air and predictably the response has been overwhelming!

April 2007

ABOB collaborated with another band Nexus (live musicians, who include – Sangeet from Aasma, Gino Banks Louiz Banks' son and Sheldon D'Silva) to give their fans a whole new music experience. Pioneering the International concept of IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) in India , the band now also performs as xen@bob where people who love dance music now can hear electronic music blended with live acoustic instrumentisation and extremely innovative and interesting vocalizations!
