Teen Deviyan (1965)

Teen Devian (English: Three Goddesses) is a 1965 Bollywood film directed by Amarjeet starring Dev Anand. Filmed mostly in black and white, with some colour scenes, the movie tells the story of a poet who falls in love with three different women. It is inspired by writer D.H. Lawrence's works. The music was composed by S. D. Burman, whose son Rahul Dev Burman composed the English version of this film titled "Oh Boy and Three Girls" but the print was never released.

Plot


Teen Deviaan starts off to commentary by Ameen Sayani, as the camera moves through Calcutta's streets, the pretty Nanda (Nanda) finds herself, as she sees it, being followed. The man, Dev Dutt Anand (Dev Anand) has been sitting in the bus beside her, and has bought a ticket for Dalhousie (after she’s bought one) and has now even followed her into the boarding house where she lives. At this point, Nanda loses her temper and yells at Dev, threatening to call the police. Instead, her shouting attracts the attention of the boarding house’s owners, Mr Pinto (Harindranath Chattopadhyay) and his wife (Ruby Myers). Mr. and Mrs. Pinto assure Nanda that she’s misunderstood, this Dev being their new lodger. Nanda is sheepish and embarrassed. But Dev forgives her readily with a remark quite apparently aimed at her, though he’s in his room and she’s in hers, watching each other only through a gap.

Within a couple of days, they’re good friends. In fact, Nanda is pretty much in love with Dev. He flirts with her, is sweet to him, even goes off on a day trip into the countryside with her.

Meanwhile, Dev starts working at Merry Musical Stores. His boss, I.S. Johar (I S Johar) flies off the handle when Dev turns up late on the very first day. But one day, I.S. Johar happens to come across a poem that Dev’s written and is so impressed that he quickly forgives Dev and all his shortcomings and prays that Dev’s poems will soon get published. Hopefully some of Dev’s subsequent fame will rub off onto Merry Musical Stores too.

One evening, Dev’s sitting on a bench in a park when a passing car goes hurtling through a puddle, and Dev is liberally splashed. He calls out to the driver Kalpana (Kalpana) that something’s fallen off her car. Curious, she reverses, then gets out of the car to have a look around. This giving Dev an opportunity to have his revenge for the drenching he received. He’s been fiddling with a hosepipe all this while, and now turns it on her, leaving her wet and furious.Even worse, when she gets into her car and tries to start it, it won’t start. Soon, a bunch of stragglers gather around. Instead of helping her, they spend all their time ogling her and passing comments. Finally, Dev takes pity on her and offers to attend to her car; the engine kicks in immediately, and Dev takes it upon himself to drive her to back home. She makes it quite clear that she doesn’t want his help, but Dev insists, and leaves her with no option but to agree. By the time he reaches her house – having draped his coat over her wet and shivering shoulders – this mysterious lady is rather more kindly disposed towards Dev, though she doesn’t show it. However, when he’s gone and she’s changing her wet clothes, she looks fondly down at his coat and sees his notebook of poems sticking out of the pocket. She has a look through it.

Next day, I.S. Johar has a piece of very good news to share with Dev his book of poems has been accepted by a publisher and the first proof copies have arrived. I.S. Johar sends out copies to some of Merry Musical Stores’ clients. One of these is the wealthy and influential socialite Radharani ‘Simi’ (Simi Garewal). Simi receives a copy of Dev’s book of poems and is completely bowled over by them. Dev happens to come to her home to deliver a piano and tune it for her while she’s reading his book, and Dev owns up to being the poet. Then, a couple of days later, a lady resurfaces in Dev’s life: the unknown woman to whom he had lent his coat. It turns out that this woman is Kalpana (Kalpana), and she’s a famous actress. Her life is a whirl of men trying to flatter her, making promises of laying their hearts at her feet, and so on. Dev’s failure to even recognize her has endeared him to her. She likes his candour, and the fact that he treats her as a friend, not as an idol. She even buys him a new coat, which she hands over to him in the car, insisting that he should wear it in exchange for his old coat. And that isn’t the only time they meet. One day, Kalpana wheedles Dev into accompanying her for a shoot in the countryside. They have a minor mishap along the way, the car goes into a ditch, and Dev and Kalpana spend an interesting day getting to know the locals. Few days later, Simi had an invitation to a party at her home. Dev is reluctant to go, but I.S. Johar persuades him. Simi is vastly influential; she knows everybody worth knowing. She can give his writing career the boost it needs. Dev must go and so he does. He is an instant success. And he manages to convince both Simi and Kalpana that he is singing for her. At party Dev gets drunk so much that Simi has to drop him to his boarding house. Nanda notices Dev and helps him upstairs to his apartment. Next morning, Nanda gets angry with Dev about his drunken act the earlier night. Dev apologizes and takes Nanda to the countryside where Nanda proposes Dev to marry her. Dev asks her to wait till the right time comes. One evening genteel Simi who is eager to spend money on Dev, to further enhance his career convinces Dev to participate in a Mushaira at Srinagar which is to be aired on All India Radio. After a few days they reach Srinagar to participate in the mushaira where Dev performs perfectly. Later at night when both of them are sitting in Shikara at Dal Lake, Simi asks Dev to come to Gulmarg. There she proposes Dev to marry her but Dev asks her to give 4 to 7 days to answer. On returning from Gulmarg, at the hotel in Srinager, Dev finds Kalpana with sadness in her eyes, which he correctly guesses to be loneliness. Kalpana admits it to him, that, she has seen the superficiality of the life that surrounds her, and she longs for someone to truly understand her, as a person, not just a beautiful face. Even here, Dev asks her to give 4 to 7 days to answer. Returning from Srinagar, Dev is in a lot of confusion about the three ladies, Teen Devian, and knowing well that he cannot marry three women in his country, a tortured and uncertain Dev finally makes his mind and decides to go with Nanda as his life-partner.

Tere Ghar Ke Saamne (1963)

Tere Ghar Ke Samne (English: In Front of Your House) is a classic 1963 Hindi film. Released on Tuesday, 1 January 1963, it was a major hit in India, taking the sixth spot in highest grossing films of the year. The film, produced by Dev Anand and written and directed by his brother Vijay Anand, is the duo's fourth collaboration after the hits Nau Do Gyarah (1957), Kala Bazar (1960) and Hum Dono (1961). Vijay Anand would later go on to direct the hits Guide (1965), Teesri Manzil (1966), and Johny Mera Naam (1970).

The film stars Dev Anand, Nutan, Rajindernath and Om Prakash in lead roles. The film's music is by S. D. Burman, while the lyrics have been penned by Hasrat Jaipuri. It was also the last movie to pair Dev Anand and Nutan together, after the films Paying Guest (1957), Baarish (1957), and Manzil (1960).

The film is a comedy which also sends across a social message that, "Not all that is new is bad, nor is all that is old good". The story is about a young architect who returns to India after having had a Western education and falls in love with a modern Indian girl, who respects Indian culture and her parents' wishes. Their fathers are rivals in everything, and never cease to quarrel. The two of them must convince their fathers to put aside their differences and live together in harmony.

Plot


Set in Delhi in 1962, Lala Jagannath (Om Prakash) and Seth Karam Chand (Harindranath Chattopadhyay), two wealthy businessmen, are bidding for the front plot in a government auction. One is westernised and wears black-rimmed spectacles, the other, traditional turban and linen. Adamant on getting the front plot of land, Lala Jagannath raises the price higher and higher. Seth Karam Chand irks him even further by raising the price by a paltry 1000 rupees, made worse by the fact that Seth Karam Chand raises his finger, leaving the auctioneer (Jankidas) and the crowd to interpret the meaning. Lala Jagannath winds up with the front plot, but at the last moment, Seth Karam Chand comes in and quotes an insane price for the back plot, leaving the rest to think something has gone wrong with him.

Back home, Seth Karam Chand informs his wife about his decision, and the two banter, with him talking about "style". His daughter, Sulekha (Nutan) points out that their house will be hidden by Lala Jagannath's one. Not willing to let such a thing happen, Seth Karam Chand and Sulekha hire an architect, Rakesh (Dev Anand). After a little friction and misunderstanding, Rakesh gets to know Sulekha, and her brother, Ranjit. (Rajendra Nath). His sidekick, Madan, (Rashid Khan), sets his eyes on Sulekha's friend, Motiya (Parveen Choudhary).

They go to visit the Qutub Minar, and no one else but Rakesh and Sulekha are willing to climb up. Slowly, but surely, Rakesh and Sulekha start to fall in love. But there's a catch that no one but Rakesh and Madan know – Rakesh is actually Lala Jagannath's son! Even then, he conceals the truth from everyone, leading to some hilarious side-splitting scenes where Rakesh tries to keep his parents away from Sulekha's, and his antics include pretending to having had an attack and making both sides believe he's scolding the other, with a little help from his sidekick.

Meanwhile, Ranjit and Rakesh's colleague, Jenny (Zarine Katrak) fall in love as well. Ranjit leaves for Kashmir, and Rakesh starts to make the plans for the houses. To add to his woes, his father insists that he design the house, and Seth Karam Chand has already hired him. Still not willing to allow the truth to be revealed, he tries to keep the designs away from each side, but to no avail. His father sees a design, insists on it, while Seth Karam Chand has already decided on that one. Fed up with all the enmity, Rakesh eventually decides to make both houses the same. His love affair with Sulekha continues. When Sulekha goes off to Shimla, Rakesh follows behind her.

Finally deciding that enough is enough, Rakesh decides to reveal the truth to Sulekha. She gets very angry with him, but thankfully, their parents don't come to know about it. He refuses to work for them, and when she demands to know why, he drops a bombshell and tells her that he is indeed Lala Jagannath's son. Feeling betrayed, she starts to avoid him at Ronny's birthday party. Undaunted, Rakesh sings a song, and she is easily wooed back.

However, Lala Jagannath and Seth Karamchand both find out, and marriage, in their eyes, is impossible. Their enmity is a barrier between their children's love, and however hard Rakesh and Sulekha try, the barrier is impenetrable. Even then, Rakesh finally manages to convince them, and they relent, embracing each other. Taking that as a yes, Rakesh and Sulekha hug each other too, overjoyed. They get married at the inauguration of the two houses that Rakesh had built.

Asha Bhosle also sings one song. "Dil Ki Manzil", which is a cabaret song. Interestingly, there are a few lines of Spanish in the song too.

Taxi Driver (1954)

Taxi Driver is a 1954 Hindi movie produced by Navketan Films. The film is directed by Chetan Anand and stars his brother Dev Anand, Dev's wife-to-be Kalpana Kartik and Johnny Walker. The film was written by Chetan himself, along with his wife Uma Anand and his other brother Vijay Anand. The film's music director is S. D. Burman and lyrics were written by Sahir Ludhianvi.

Plot


A nostalgic journey through 1950s Bombay with its quiet, peaceful and scenic background, electric trams, and a unique taxi driver, Mangal, who is called "Hero" by his friends. A driver who drives a cab by day, then drinks at night, listens to the seductive club dancer Sylvie, and then goes into a drunken stupor - and wakes up with a hangover. One day, while assisting another taxi driver, Mangal comes to the assistance of a damsel in distress Mala, who is being molested by two thugs. Mangal gallantly rescues her, and attempts to take her to her destination, but to no avail, as the person she is looking for has moved. The next day, Mangal and the young woman, Mala, again attempt to seek Ratanlal, a music director, but the entire day is spent in vain. Mala lives in Mangal's tiny apartment and both become attracted to each other. When Mala finds out about Sylvie, she leaves him. He goes in her search, but finds that she has become a famous singer with the help of her music director friend.

Will Mangal ever get a chance to tell about his love for Mala? What will Sylvie's reaction be?


Legacy


Dev Anand's taxi in the movie was the British made Hillman Minx black car with number 1111. Such became the popularity following the film that the British made Hillman Minx became a vehicle of choice as a taxi in Bombay until the 1970s.

Solva Saal (1958)

Solva Saal (English: Sixteenth Year) is a 1958 Hindi movie. Produced by Chandrakant C Desai, the film is directed by Raj Khosla. The film stars Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman. The film's music is by Sachin Dev Burman and the lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri.

This film also contains the song "Hai apna dil to awaara" picturized on Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman in the train, sung by Hemant Kumar, mouth organ by Rahul Dev Burman.

Director Raj Khosla makes a cameo appearance in the movie.

Plot


Laaj (Waheeda Rehman) whose father has arranged for her to get married to a friend's son, takes a family heirloom pearl necklaces and elopes with her beau Shyam to Bombay. On the train, a crafty journalist named Pran (Dev Anand) overhears the lovers' plans and follows them in search of a story. Then Shyam gets off the train and runs off with the necklace.

In pursuit of Shyam and to recover the necklace it's Pran to the rescue. What follows is a song-filled caper of intrigue, adventure and romance, all set in one eventful night. Laaj is helped by Pran, first on the railway track, then when Laaj, depressed tries to commit suicide by jumping into the sea. a brief interlude with the taxi drivers who put them on the track of Shyam, with twists and turns the necklace is retrieved and Laaj reaches home in time before her father wakes up and notices her absence, young Laaj is wiser by the events of the night realizes that her Beau was only interested in her wealth, She agrees to go with her Father to send him off at the airport and also to meet up there with her Fathers friend and his son to whom her father would like her to get married.

A rather subdued Laaj waiting at the airport with her Father when he notices his friend and his son coming up to meet them, he tells Laaj "there is the boy i want you to marry, i like him a lot but i want you to see him and decide" Laaj looks up towards the person her father pointed out, and suddenly she breaks out into a smile. Life is worth living after all.

Paying Guest (1957)

Paying Guest is a 1957 Bollywood film directed by Subodh Mukherjee. The film stars Dev Anand and Nutan along with Shubha Khote.

The soundtrack, composed by Sachin Dev Burman, received a degree of popularity and made a lasting impression. The lyrics were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri. Paying Guest was the second hit film of the team of Mukherjee, Hussain, Dev Anand and S. D. Burman, who had combined two years earlier to make the successful Munimji.

Plot 


Paying Guest” is about a struggling lawyer (Ramesh), who falls in love with his landlord's daughter, wins her heart only to lose her faith from a misunderstanding and eventually saves her from a murder charge. Nutan (Shanti) and Shoba Khote (Chanchal) have little love lost between them following a college debate that evokes contrasting views from them – Shanti prefers love over money. To prove her point, Chanchal marries a wealthy lawyer Dayal (played by Gajanan Jagirdar) but comes to grief when her husband finds little time for her. Chanchal hatches a plot with Prakash, Shanti's alcoholic brother-in-law (Yakub), to eliminate her husband. Shanti is implicated before Ramesh plays the saviour's role on predictable lines. The movie ends with the two uniting against a conspiring Chanchal and Prakash. 

The pace of the movie, directed by Subodh Mukerji, and the story, by Nasir Husain, are nothing to rave about but the same cannot be said of the music.


Contrasting views


Dev Anand is the paying guest in this film but Nutan it is who holds the key, literally, to the success of this romantic comedy. Every time the movie threatens to meander from the planned path, she restores quality with her vibrant presence. The close-up shots capture her pristine beauty even as Dev Anand competes to match her acting talents during one-on-one situations. Nutan emerges a winner by miles. Dev Anand, at 34, was a ‘veteran' of more than 40 movies and established star when “Paying Guest” was released. Nutan, barely 21, was new to the industry but not a novice, having won the Filmfare Award for “Seema”, a moving portrayal of an orphan who finds her way after immense struggle. “Seema” had given early indications of Nutan's commanding skills as an actor and the commercial success of “Paying Guest” was a confirmation of the fact that she could carry a movie on her own despite a weak plot.

Sweet melody


With a composer like Sachin Dev Burman and lyricist like Majrooh Sultanpuri, one can expect nothing but melody at its sweetest. 

Dev Anand did not have Mohammad Rafi as his background voice in this movie. Kishore Kumar had begun to share the stage, giving Dev Anand some hits in “Nau Do Gyarah”, released the same year as “Paying Guest”. The year also featured Dev Anand and Nutan as the leading pair in “Barish”, a forgettable movie, but “Paying Guest” made an impact on the audience, thanks to Nutan and Sachinda's music.

The actor refers to the movie when he writes in his autobiography about ‘O Nigaahen Mastana', a duet by Kishore and Asha Bhonsle

“The audience had swooned over both of us, as I had on Nutan!” wrote Dev Anand in his autobiography. 

Another duet, ‘Ah Chhod Do Aanchal Zamana Kya Kahega' brings out the best out of Nutan – and Asha. You warm up early in the movie to Kishore singing ‘Mana Janab Ne Pukara Nahi' with Dev Anand riding a cycle, trying to woo Nutan. There is another solo by Kishore, ‘Hai Hai Hai Yeh Nigaahen' before Burman opts for Lata Mangeshkar to sing the memorable ‘Chand Phir Nikla', easily the pick of all the numbers, an evergreen composition that figures among her personal best.

Dev Anand and Nutan make a delightful pair to dominate the movie and create entertaining fare. But Nutan steals the show with her impeccable performance.

Pyaasa (1957)

Pyaasa (Hindi: प्यासा Pyāsā, meaning "Thirsty") is a 1957 Indian film produced by, directed by, and starring Guru Dutt. The film tells the story of Vijay, a struggling poet trying to make his works known in post-independence India, and Gulabo, a prostitute with a heart of gold who eventually helps him get his poems published. The music was composed by S.D. Burman.

With the commercial success of thrillers like Baazi, Jaal, Aar Paar and CID as well as comedies like Mr. & Mrs. '55, Guru Dutt and his studio were financially secure and established. From 1957, he could now make movies he really wanted to make, including Pyaasa. In 2002, Pyaasa was ranked at No. 160 on the Sight & Sound critics' and directors' poll of all-time greatest films. In 2005, Pyaasa was rated as one of the 100 best films of all time by Time magazine, which called it "the soulfully romantic of the lot." Indiatimes Movies ranks the movie amongst the Top 25 Must See Bollywood Films. On the occasion of Valentine's Day 2011 Time magazine has declared it as one of the top 10 romantic movies of all time.

Plot


Vijay (Guru Dutt) is an unsuccessful poet whose works are not taken seriously by publishers or his brothers (who sell his poems as waste paper). Unable to bear their taunting that he is a good-for-nothing, he stays away from home and is often out on the streets. He encounters a good-hearted prostitute named Gulabo (Waheeda Rehman), who is enamoured with his poetry and falls in love with him. He also encounters his ex-girlfriend Meena (Mala Sinha) from college and finds out that she has married a big publisher Mr. Ghosh (Rehman) for financial security. Ghosh hires him as a servant to find out more about him and Meena. A dead beggar to whom Vijay gave his coat and whom he tries to save unsuccessfully from the path of a running train is mistaken for Vijay. Gulabo goes to Ghosh and gets his poems published. Ghosh does so feeling he can exploit the poems and make a killing. The poems are very successful. However, Vijay is alive and in the hospital after the train mishap.

Ghosh and Shyam, Vijay's close friend, refuse to recognise him and he is committed to a mental asylum since he insists he is Vijay and is thought to be mad. Vijay's brothers too are bought off by Ghosh not to recognise him and a memorial is held for the dead poet. Vijay with the help of his friend Abdul Sattar (Johnny Walker) escapes from the mental asylum and reaches the memorial service where he denounces this corrupt and materialistic world. Seeing that Vijay is alive his friend and brothers take side with a rival publisher for more money and declare this is Vijay. At a function to honour him, Vijay becomes sick of all the hypocrisy in the world around him and declares he is not Vijay. He then leaves with Gulabo to start a new life.


Production


In the original ending Guru Dutt wanted to show that Vijay left all alone but on the distributors' insistence the ending was changed. The film was originally titled Pyaas (thirst), but Guru Dutt later changed it to Pyaasa to better describe the film.

The role of Shyam was originally to be played by Guru Dutt's real life friend, Johny Walker but was then assigned to one of Guru Dutt's assistant directors. Guru Dutt wanted to film red light area scenes on locations in Kolkata (then Calcutta) but the crew was attacked by a group of pimps. Guru Dutt however recreated sets on the basis of photos taken at Kolkata.

It is also surmised that the story is based on the life of film's lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi who had failed affair with poet and writer Amrita Pritam .

The movie boasts one of the best performances of S.D. Burman, Sahir Ludhianvi, Geeta Dutt and Mohammed Rafi to produce one of the most lyrical Hindi musicals. Pyaasa marked the last collaboration of the long-lasting team of composer Burman and lyricist Ludhianvi.

Music expert Rajesh Subramanian reveals that Guru Dutt wanted Rafi to sing "Jaane Woh Kaise Log". But Burman had decided to record it in Hemant Kumar's voice. A major argument took place between the director, composer, writer Abrar Alvi and Geeta Dutt. Finally Dutt, who remained unconvinced, had to give in to the pressure.

In 2004, the soundtrack for Pyaasa was chosen as one of "The Best Music in Film" by Sight & Sound, the British Film Institute magazine.


The film then and now


  • There was a debate between writer Abrar Alvi and Guru Dutt on film's ending. Abrar wanted the protagonist to accept and compromise with the prevailing material social reality; Guru Dutt insisted otherwise.
  • Song 'Sar jo tera chakraye' composed by S.D Burman was based on a tune from British Movie 'Harry Black', which was later released in India as 'Harry Black and The Tiger'. S. D. Burman was initially not happy in copying a western tune "but later changed it so well that when the producer of the 'Harry Black and the Tiger' visited India, he heard the song and not only failed to recognize the tune, but commended Dada on it' Abrar laughs."

  • Pyaasa was to be made with actresses, Nargis Dutt and Madhubala in the roles Mala Sinha and Waheeda Rehman played eventually. But the two actresses couldn't decide which role they wanted to play and Guru Dutt eventually opted for two then new actresses, Mala and Waheeda.
  • Guru Dutt wanted Dilip Kumar to play the leading role in the movie, which the tragedy king declined. Guru Dutt himself played and movie went on to become one of the most commercially successful movies of the year.
  • The popular song "Hum aapki aankhon mein" was added to the movie on behest of distributors to bring some relief in rather pessimist film. It was never planned in original cut.
  • After a slow opening, Pyaasa went on to be a major commercial success of the year. This gave Guru Dutt the confidence to make a repeat on a grand scale. However, Kaagaz Ke Phool went on to be a commercial disaster. Ironically, the movie picked up a cult following world over in 1980s much after Guru Dutt died.
  • Waheeda Rahman's role in Pyaasa was based on a real life character. Abrar Alvi and his friends were visiting Bombay and they decided to visit the red light area. Alvi got talking to a girl who called herself Gulabo. According to Alvi " As I left, she thanked me in a broken voice, saying that it was the first time that she had been treated with respect, in a place where she heard only abuses. I used-her exact words in the film"
  • Guru Dutt and his movies, including Pyaasa, have a large cult following in France and Germany. It was a huge commercial success during its 1984 French Premiere, ironically something Guru Dutt never witnessed during his lifetime. Since then, the movie has been screened to huge mass appeal world over, like the recent screening at The 9th International Festival of Asian Cinema held in Vesoul, in February 2003,

Restoration


This film is restored & digitized by Mumbai-based Ultra Media & Entertainment. As per the report, the original camera negative had come to them from the archives completely melted, with parts damaged or lost. Their biggest challenge was the flickering. Every frame was at a different angle and there was no stability. After several clean-ups, they managed to retrieve the actual content from the original camera negative but it lacked clarity and depth. 45 restoration experts worked for almost 4 months over 2 lac frames. The original monaural soundtrack remastered at 24-bit from the 35 mm optical soundtrack. The company sent it to the 72nd Venice International Film Festival held in 2015 where it competed with 20 other films and was selected to be screened as part of the Venice Classics section aongwith 11 other films from all over the world.

Plot


The film starts with Madan Gopal (Dev Anand) being thrown out of his house for not paying the rent. He goes to visit his friend, who has been helping him collect his mail, and finds a letter from his uncle, Manoharlal. Manoharlal writes that he is willing eleven lakh rupees (nine lakhs of cash and two lakhs worth of property), to Madan. It was originally willed to his sister-in-law's son, Kuldeep (Krishan Dhawan). After seeing Kuldeep's bad behaviour, though, Manoharlal decides to give the money to Madan.

Madan promptly gets a truck and sets off for Bombay, and on the way, his friend drags him to a wedding. The two discuss the wedding, with Madan saying that if he was in the girl's place, he would run away. True enough, when an eavesdropping friend tells the bride, Raksha (Kalpana Kartik) that the groom, Surjit (Jeevan), she decides to run away and hide in Madan's truck.

Raksha disguises herself as a Sikh boy with the psedonym of Sardar Nihal Singh and hides in his truck. Madan discovers "him" and the two quarrel nonstop, but Madan is compelled to take him along because the boy has money, food and water. The disguise soon comes loose and Sardar Nihal Singh is revealed to be a girl. Madan doesn't know her past, but the two of them fall in love, with Madan teasing her on several occasions, calling her a "thief". Raksha, who was unhappy with her marriage, finally finds happiness travelling with Madan.

When the two of them reach Bombay, Madan goes off to see his friend, Radheshyam (Madan Puri), but is informed that Manoharlal has died. A shocked Madan takes out the letter and finds out that it is a few months old. Radheshyam says that all the property has gone to Kuldeep and his mother (Lalita Pawar).

Plot


Sunil Kumar (Dev Anand) is a star cricket player in his city of Jhansi and lives with his brother's family. Sunil's sister in Law, Uma and her little son have deep affection for him and keep up that Sunil is the reason for their happy family. Soon, Sunil leaves for Bombay to attend a job interview and there he rents a room to stay. The landlord's daughter Geeta (Mala Sinha) initially dislikes Sunil but after watching him play cricket, she falls in love with him. They soon get married and go back to Jhansi to live with Sunil's family. But their harmonious life undergoes problem when Sunil's behavior becomes wayward and everyone starts hating him. What reasons are leading to friction between Sunil and Geeta? Why has Sunil become everyone's object of dislike? What secret is Sunil hiding from the world?

Kala Pani (1958)

Kalapani is a 1958 Hindi movie produced by Dev Anand for Navketan Films and directed by Raj Khosla. The film is based on A.J. Cronin's 1953 novel, Beyond This Place, and is a remake of the 1955 Bengali film Sabar Upaarey. The film stars Dev Anand, Madhubala, Nalini Jaywant, Bir Sakuja and Agha. The film's music is by Sachin Dev Burman, and the lyrics are by Majrooh Sultanpuri.

The movie won two Filmfare awards including Filmfare Best Actor Award and Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award.

Synopsis


Karan comes to know that his father, Shankarlal is in jail. And that his mother has been pretending from his childhood that his father has died. On meeting his father, Karan comes to know that he has been jailed for a murder that he did not commit. Karan sets out to gather proof of his father's innocence so that he can reopen the case filed against him, and set him free.

Karan comes to meet one of the witnesses who had spoken for his father in the court, who tells him about the investigating officer, Inspector Mehta.

Karan stays as a Paying guest, of which Asha is the owner. Asha is herself a journalist.
From Inspector Mehta, Karan comes to know about other witnesses - Kishori and Jumman. The Inspector confesses that although he smelt a rat, he was silenced by the defence lawyer, Diwan Sardarilal. Inspector Mehta also tells Karan, that he overheard Kishori and Jumman speaking of a letter, and that this might prove to be a mighty proof of Shankarlal's innocence.

Karan goes about to woo Kishori, so that he can get the letters possessed by her. In the meantime, romantic feeling develop between Karan and Asha.

Karan also approaches Diwan Sardarilal as to how he can reopen the case to prove his father's innocence. He also asks if it will be enough if he can get the letter from Kishori. The Diwan tells him to first get the letter, so that he can see what to make out of it.

The Diwan turns out to be a villain. He warns Rai Bahadur Jaswant Rai, the person who actually committed the murder, that Karan is after the letter that Kishori possesses. Rai Bahadur Jaswant Rai in turn, asks Jumman to warn Kishori about this. Kishori confronts Karan saying he cheated her, that he was not fair to show false love to her. But Karan answers back, that one who is the case for jailing his innocent father cannot complain to him of lying to her. Kishori, upon knowing the truth, repents and gives the letter to Karan.

An overjoyed Karan shows the letter to the Diwan, only to see the Diwan burn the letter. Karan realizes that the Diwan was also involved in the plot. He starts a protesting against the Diwan outside his own house, but gets arrested by the police.

Asha tries to help him, by printing in the newspaper she works for, about the Diwan. but she is stopped by her editor, who says that she does not have proof against the Diwan to print anything against him.

Kishori comes to know of this. She comes to Karan, now carrying the original letter. Karan submits this to reopen the case against his father. The Diwan admits his crime. And the story ends with Shankarlal coming out of the prison.

Plot


Dinesh (Dev Anand) lives a middle-class lifestyle with his mother in Bombay. On his fifth birthday his father left them never to return.

Now Inspector Dinesh has grown up, is working for the Criminal Investigations Department, and has been assigned to stop the circulation of fake currency notes. His investigations take him to Sunderdas, who is killed. He then masquerades as social worker Abdul Rashid to try to get some information from a jailed convict, Banwarilal, to no avail. Finally, he dons the disguise of wealthy Kunver Vijay Bahadur, rents a suite in Hotel Paris and befriends Manohar (Madan Puri) and several other gangsters. He gets arrested and lodged in the same cell as Banwarilal. From there the men break out and join Manohar and the rest of the gang.

It is here Dinesh will find out the king-pin behind the racket. But before he can do anything, he find himself confronting his past and will be trapped in an underwater fortress with his sweetheart, press reporter Renu (Madhubala).

Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai (1961)

Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai (English: When One Falls in Love) is a 1961 Bollywood movie that became a box office hit. It was written, produced, and directed by Nasir Hussain. The first film Hussain ever produced, it featured Dev Anand and Hussain fixture Asha Parekh in the leading roles. Pran played the villain in the film and Rajindernath starred in a supporting role.

Hussain would rework some of the elements from this film into a later film, Teesri Manzil (1966). This was also the only time that he used Shankar Jaikishan as music directors and Dev Anand in a leading role. The playback singers were Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar.

Plot



Nisha lives a very wealthy lifestyle in Neelgaon, India, with her businessman dad, Sardar Roop Singh. She is now of marriageable age, and her dad wants her to marry his friend's son, Sohan, but Nisha dislikes him. While traveling to Darjeeling with a dance troupe, she meets with her dad's business associates' son, Popat Lal, and after a few misadventures, both fall in love with each other. She takes him to meet her dad where he can also finalize his business transaction, but when Roop comes inside, he finds that Popat has disappeared, and in his place is another man claiming to be the real Popat. Nisha's heart is broken and she starts to hate Popat. She does meet with Popat, who tells her that his real name is Sunder and both had been promised to each other by their respective parents, but Roop had subsequently changed his mind. Nisha believes him and agrees to marry him without her father's blessings. When the marriage is to take place, a man named Khanna comes over and tells Nisha that Sunder is already married to woman named Shanti, who he subsequently killed, and had been the primary accused in this case by the police. Many of the songs went on to become classics and are still remembered even now, particularly, "Jiya O Jiya", "Teri Zulphon Se Judai" sung by Mohammad Rafi were big hits and "Sau Saal Pehle" by Mohammad Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar.

House No. 44 is a 1955 Hindi film directed by M. K. Burman and produced by Dev Anand for his banner Navketan Films. The movie stars Dev Anand and Kalpana Kartik in a lead role. Plot


Ashok works for the notorious gangster Sunder and his men. One day he comes across a dead body and he reports it to the police. Ashok then meets Nimmo and falls in love with her. Nimmo asks Ashok to leave the life of a gangster and settle down with her. Ashok agrees but after a few days of not having any food, Ashok realizes that he was better off being a gangster. The rest of the movie portrays the struggle of Ashok trying to stay with Nimmo or with Sunder.

Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai is a 1960 Hindi romantic drama film produced by S. A. Bagar. It is written and directed by Kishore Sahu. The film stars Raaj Kumar, Meena Kumari and Nadira as leads. The film tells the story of a surgeon is obligated to marry the daughter of a family friend, while he is love with a colleague nurse, played Meena Kumari. It is one of the noted acting performances of lead actress Meena Kumari's career.

The films music is by Shankar Jaikishan, and features hit song, the Hawaiin-themed "Ajeeb Dastan Hai Yeh" sung by Lata Mangeshkar. At the 1961 Filmfare Awards it created an upset by beating popular musical epic, Mughal-e-Azam of Naushad for the Best Music Director category.

Plot


Sushil Verma (Raaj Kumar) is a surgeon in the Shimla Hospital. He lives on the hospital grounds in a doctor's house with his ageing mother and younger sister Munni (Kumari Naaz). Sushil's father died and his father's close friend paid for his medical school fees, thus creating a debt that Sushil's mother feels needs to be fulfilled.

Karuna (Meena Kumari) is a nurse who comes to the Shimla hospital and first encounters Dr. Verma during an emergency surgery. Both are clearly besotted with each other, but keep their feelings restrained.

By chance, on a nurses' beach day trip, Karuna meets Munni, who injures herself whilst playing. She takes Munni back to her house, not knowing that she is Dr. Verma's sister, and the house she is visiting belongs to him. She dresses Munni's wounds, sees how much work needs to be done in the house, and the fact that his mother is too ill to attend household tasks. She immediately steps in and fulfills the duties of the housewife; cooking, cleaning and taking care of everyone. Sushil comes home to see this and falls even more in love.

However, later on his mother organises a trip to Kashmir for the whole family, and conveniently guilt trips Sushil to marry Kusum (Nadira), the daughter of the man who paid for his medical school fees.
They come back to Shimla, and Karuna is devastated when she finds this out. Although she manages to conceal this for a while, situations keep arising and Kusum soon gets jealous of Sushil's preference for Karuna, and her perceived ill-treatment. Kusum manipulates and mistreats her mother-in-law and sister-in-law, until Sushil orders her out of the house. She goes back to Kashmir.

Dr. Verma's mother then realises her mistake and should have gotten him married to Karuna.
To avoid scandal Karuna moves to another hospital. But Kusum seeks to enact revenge on her. Dr. Verma finds this out and tries to beat Kusum to Karuna, which yields a cliff top high speed car chase, resulting in Kusum's death. The film concludes with reunion of Karuna and Sushil.
